Dysfunctional teens? Doesn't really sound like anything new. Though making powerpoint presentations about what you want for christmas seems creepy.

I think it may be more of an introvert/extrovert thing. A lot of people seem to need some distractions in order to concentrate, and do stuff like going to a coffeeshop to get work done for the people moving around and the noise. I, on the other hand, find just the potential of being disturbed by someone a distraction :)

The powerpoint presentation sounded scary. But the rest is just teeangers being teenagers. Like you said, depends how introverted they are - extroverts are just more likely to flit after every new thing, and more likely to have all the phones and gizmos to distract themselves.
