Oho - this bodes ill...

Just phoned up the people handling the warranty on my laptop about the fault with the CD and battery running. They want to eliminate the possibility that either of those is due to a software fault.

I told them that I was running Linux, and they said they'd like me to phone back with the laptop in front of me so that they can eliminate software being the problem.

I asked them if they'd be able to do that on a non-windows system.

They said they'd like me to phone back with the laptop in front of me so that they can eliminate software being the problem.

Yes, there is an element of repetition there. When I asked if they were sure they could test it over the phone with Linux on, they said they'd like me to phone back with the laptop in front of me so that they can eliminate software being the problem.

Hmm.

That's kinda stupid.....

They won't even answer if they know how to check it with linux as the OS? what kind of sense does that make? If they can't check it it just wastes your time and theirs....

Yeah - that's it, really. I know it's a hardware fault, they can't check for software issues anyway. Might as well just get it packaged up and sent off and fixed.

Hmph.

You know the way that some machines, when the encounter a critical error or a peice of code it can't work with, reboot? I get the feeling that you've found a helpdesk that works on the same principal.
Who is the company?

It's Comet's PC helpline. They were great last time, but the laptop was new and incontravertibly fried. This time they're just being annoying.

And yeah - they're on a permanent error loop.

Uh-oh, somebody is following a response script and doesn't have clue one. But the fact that they'll call you back probably means that you'll get somebody at least marginally more knowledgeable to talk to.

You probably know this already but there is no guarantee that they won't simply overwrite your harddisk with the factory defaults. Meaning you lose all your data and applications. So better take a back up if you can.

Thanks Apel - I've already backed up, as last time, they just replaced my hard drive with a new one. Hopefully I'll get better luck on my next call.

Just wait till they ask you to do Windows specific things, and then say it's not working 'cos you're using Linux ;)

Yeah - I'll look forward to that :/ If all else fails, I'll just tip coffee over it. That event is one they can cope with, it seems, but not a dodgy CD player and power supply.
