Meme dream

[livejournal.com profile] cleverkat made this up, and it was a damn fine meme:

If you could have any profession in the world, what would you be?

Three answers for me - a professor, a photojournalist or a stand-up comedian.

I'm not quite sure what I'd like to be a professor of. Maths and theoretical physics sounds both cool and feasible. Otherwise archaeology or linguistics. Maybe a combination of both - some sort of culturo-archaeologist who specialises in mythology and sociolinguistics. But mostly I just want to be eccentric, dress badly and get paid to research my passions.

It would also give me the chance to write. But being an author would do that. Except I really don't think I have even one novel in me :P So short stories would be better. Then I'm quite good at researching and assimilating information, and being a photographer too - photo-journalism!

The only subliminal one is the stand-up comedian. I'm actually quite funny. Not everyone appreciates it, and nor do I show it everywhere, but I have quite a range of wit, from feeble puns to vitriolic rants. But not everyone understands it, and it's not so pretty in a girl. Plus, and this is for no good reason, I'm terrified of public-speaking.

I guess I just always get this lingering and nagging thought that if I were a bloke, I could maybe make a living by being funny. But it would probably help with the other two as well. I never really confessed that last one to anybody before.

Anyway, please add your own and pass this on :)

Hehe, now that's what I call ambition! ;)

stand-up comedian...I'm terrified of public-speaking.

Maybe you could perform from behind a tarp, or some sort of screen. :D You could even set it up like a confessional. Or you could develop several (more? ;) ) neurotic conditions, and go the route of the recording-studio-only genius, a la The Beatles or Glenn Gould :)

Btw, I'm willing to contribute if you need any muscle to rough-up hecklers ;)

*grin* Never been to one, but I get the idea. Cross it with counselling, charge people money to be insulted. I could probably retire. Or maybe not :)

Ooo - I'm outraged ;)

Marvellous - I don't really have an intimidating physique. As soon as I become famous, consider yourself employed.

And here is as good as anywhere - dinner? Saturday 3rd July? Not sure exactly what time yet, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet up and discuss Toronto.

I don't know, I think being female is an advantage for that now. There's already too many male comics, so a female has much better odds of making it. Also there's more material that hasn't been "done" when you're a female comic.

Yeah, that sounds great. Do you know where you're staying yet? What time of the day are you flying in? I believe I remember Allison saying that she was thinking of driving up the day before, so me and Allison could meet up and then meet you at the airport? Or, well, whatever you'd like :)

Ok, cool!

Aras I will get there early Sat or late Friday night, and was planning on crashing for a bit until the plane arrives. I think tea-time was the arrival time, which I interpreted to mean afternoonish. I would love to meet up with you first and go from there, since you probably know the way and I do not :D

I won't be back in town until the 24th of June but will be available through email at aleetle@yahoo.com if you want to work things out more clearly. Though I do have about a week in town before leaving again, so there is plenty of time. (not that I'm a P or anything... ;)

Yeah - those are all good points. Maybe I could find a way to put a feminine spin on being a cynical old grouch :D Although a lot of that rant is just covering the fact that I can never come up with ideas (like the novel problem, really) and I suffer from wicked stage fright :(

Being met at the airport would be brilliant! Thanks to both of you - I always get a bit disorientated when I land, and some friendly faces would be good. So I get in at 14:45 (your time), so say around 4? That would give me time to get through customs, but chat it through with Allison too, and let me know.

I'm in at 14:45, so meet about 4? And I'd love to see you both at the airport :) Allison - I just mailed you about the hostels.
