Especially the expenditure/target comparisons:

In "other cybermule news", I've started the last Harry Potter book in a bid to read all 5 in a month. I've also blinked sarcastically at a senior member of staff who suggested that I must have created two absolutely identical spreadsheets, but for the fact that one of them had all the useful data deleted. No, that was you. You trashed it, then hit save when you closed it down. Lucky I keep backups really, isn't it?
Only 3 hours to go until the weekend. Can't wait...
Ooh - a

You are a tortoiseshell or calico cat. Man, are you
nuts or what? You should try taking some
tranquilizers. Calm down, you hyper thing!
You've got a great personality though. You're
so lively and you are known for getting into
mischief.
What color of cat are you?

legendary cat of mystery.

Date: 2004-01-09 09:10 am (UTC)You are an orange cat, fierce, unpredictable, and a
little mean sometimes. You've got lots of
masculine energy and woah, I wouldn't want to
be in your way if I got you angry!

Which is sort of an odd description, since one of the orange cats I know is just a total sweetheart, and the other two are very shy.

Date: 2004-01-09 01:19 pm (UTC)Of course I've also had fish (2 of them actually) that committed suicide and a dog that was kidnapped by a satanic cult (or so we assume).
You were told not to swim in the fish tank...

Hmmmm...I guess you meant the 'Luxuries and Needs' comparison?
I guess the problem is not directly 'Give up ice cream to get clean water for everybody'. In a similar comparison, you can't really perform a lot of long-term good by just shipping in food into areas where people need it.
Imo, real progress is made when you can build up complex economies and social structures that can withstand stresses and strains over time, and build their own wealth, rather than just getting a few cast-off dollars from 1st-world folks that decide to cut back on their perfume...

Definitely - now I'm wondering what the comparative costs of doing that are, compared to handouts? I don't begrudge welfare at all - I'd happily pay much more tax - but I don't always think it fosters a healthy society (too long to go into :p). I think I was mainly just shocked at how much we do spend on luxuries though...
