Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say 'Cybermule' at will to old ladies.

In other news, I'm pissed off at a bunch of things. Firstly, the weather. Will it just stop raining and blowing already? Everything strutural in my garden is collapsing, I haven't been able to go on a decent run in weeks, and it's just getting tired, OK?

Secondly, people have to start taking responsibility for the problems in the world.

Like MRSA.

If we just stopped demanding penicillin every time we got a feckin' virus, then we'd be in less of a problem with this. And why don't people ever wash their hands in hospital? Not the staff - they wash as damn often as their overstuffed schedules let them. But the people visiting. They waltz in with their takeaways and their messy children, don't wash their hands on the way in or the way out. like, HELLLOOOOO! THERE ARE SICK PEOPLE HERE! Probably best to minimise germ transfer either way, huh?

When I was on the wards I got berated for a bit of fluff in the corner of the woman's mum's room. Her kids were sat on the floor eating cold burgers out of carrier bags stuffed full of every sort of junk you can think of. And this patient. had chlostridium, apparently caused by the dirty fluff.

Maybe it was the hospital's fault, maybe it wasn't, but I don't think they could take the blame for her ill-disciplined kids picking anything up.

And don't get me started on environmental issues...

Actually, the main reason I'm so pissy is probably spending the majority of the past two days sitting around in the Crown Court waiting room in Gloucester. But that's a story for another day.

it would be nice if people would take responsibility for their own stuffs. i think the world might explode if that actually happened though....

Here in Canada now at every entrance to the hospital there's these things that are like liquid-soap dispensers, where you pump it a few times and then rub the substance into your hands and rub your hands together til it evaporates. It's some kind of disinfectant I suppose. You're supposed to do it whenever you enter or leave. I think I've seen about half the people actually using them, usually when leaving more then entering, but it really just takes a few seconds when you get in the habit.

It's alcohol and a bit of glycerine, so it's pretty harmless, but it's also really drying. When my grandmother was in hospital, and we were coming and going a lot, we used that, and soap, and gowns, and gloves, because she'd already contracted MRSA. When she returned home briefly, we stocked her apartment with all sorts of lovely liquid soaps and lotions. I've never understood how hard it can be just to wash your hands.

we have this stuff at work, but it also has moisturiser in it to combat the drying effect.
I insisted one was installed in my IT Office to prevent the spread of germs from keyboard to keyboard. I believe that one should take health matters seriously no matter where you are; the fact I work in a food manufacturing plant just makes the antibacterial soaps easier to get, not more important.

We do too, now that I think of it, but it smells just like vodka, so using it can get you some funny looks. We also have Lysol wipes that we use on keyboards, since ours are shared. It is sort of horrifying using one of those and seeing it turn grey, though.

Heh. Reckon my mum must use that soap ;)

Exactly - only takes 30 seconds. I'm not perfect at it, but I certainly do it all the time when I'm in and out of hospitals.

We have them too. I don't think they're obvious enough, although they are near the doors. When we had an outbreak of foot-and-mouth, you had to sanitise your feet in all sorts of farm-related places. This is more sensible, really, and less hassle. Not sure why people don't do it.

I love how people just expect antibiotics, but stop taking them as soon as they feel better. That's why were running out - stuff develops an immunity to antibiotics and then we can't use them any more.

We've got this list of three wide spectrum antibiotics that we keep only for use in hostpitals. After they stop being effective, we're stuffed. We'll need to discover new medicines.

the reasoning behind running a course of antibiotics to the end was taught to me in school. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that was told... Yet it still doesn't seem to be part of the common knowledge on the UK populace. Goodness only knows why not :/

People don't know nothing. It's quite crap really, as I'm sure my doctor's always told me to finish them too.

Antibiotic misuse....grrr! There are too many ignorant idiots who don't have a clue what a virus or a bacterium is! (Let alone a prion!) (I'm working on a degree in microbiology and immunology, by the way.)

It's shocking how gullible people are about science. I won't even start on the maths rant...

How far through your degree are you? I started doing biochemistry, but actually qualified as a chemist. I did a stint on mental health nursing too, so that generally gives me license to grumble about any number of health or science related options ;)

sorry for blabbing...

What's the math rant? *curious*

I'm just beginning my degree. I graduated from high school in 1998 (I'm old! Most of my college classmates graduated this millennium!) and was forced into college by my parents. I was in college from Sept 1998-April 2002, taking a year off in between. I didn't know what I wanted to do/what degree to work towards, so what I took didn't amount to anything; I simply took random courses that interested me (biology, psychology, French, Spanish) as well as the required English.

I don't know what job or career I want, but I took a microbiology course at the first college I went to, and loved it, and I have always liked biology, so getting a degree in microbi/immunology was the only logical and realistic option for me. Last year I managed to get rid of nearly all the bad things in my life (working on the divorce) and get some money together to finally start school.

So I started college last fall to work on transfer credits for university, which I hope to transfer to in the fall of 2008. Unfortunately, I never got my chemistry or math credits, so I've been working on that, as well as the required physics. So really, I'm starting from the very beginning, at least in the core courses that are required for a BSc degree. In the fall I should finally be able to start organic chem and cell biology! It will be tough, but should be interesting.

What is your job? Something to do with chemistry?

I just get in a big rant about how everyone seems to think it's cool being innumerate when nobody would ever admit to being unable to read. I'm too knackered right now, but it will surface.

I'm old too - I graduated in chemistry in 1995! And I took a bit of a break, then did a masters in theoretical chemistry; now I'm a statistician. Only that's quite dull, so I'm a freelance IT designer and gardener too, in a really small way. One day I'll probably end up in some sort of medicine field, but right now I'm busy having a baby. Or growing one, if you put it less dramatically :)

And I didn't really see it as blabbing. That rarely happens, and you definitely seem too smart :)
