OK - does anyone out there know anything about British wildlife? I spotted a strange mammal that I've never seen before lurking by a garden hedge, near some open fields. At the shoulder, it was about as high as a small cat, but with a long thin weasel shape. I think it had a busy face and tail, rather like a Cheshire cat, and was quite dark with silver-ish tints around the face.

Polecat maybe?

I think there's a wild population..

Hmm. Thanks :) That was the thought that sprang to my mind, but I didn't think that they lived so far south. I'll go and check it out...

It does mention they're increasing in numbers and repopulating old habitats.

Ooo - thanks for the link :) The drawings really do look like what I saw, and I guess it's possible that they've repopulated Gloucestershire. I just wasn't expecting to see it in such an urban area!

Well you're close to Wales and that's where they're most popular.
