I'm trying to write a CV, and I've remembered just how crap at those things I am. And just to rub it in, I can't find my MSc certificate anywhere. I couldn't even remember when I did it until I fortuitously unearthed a copy of my dissertation. I'm a giga-spaz :( Plus, rummaging through my old envelopes (that's my filing system, OK?) made me nostalgic and sniffly.

What is good though, is that my room seems to be a slow dripping portal to a and of butterflies. One appears, lives a few days flitting around the room, then dies quietly in a corner. They're all red admirals. I figure it's best to keep them inside - it's way too cold at the moment. I'm gambling on the fact that a few days in my warm(er) brightly coloured room, with plenty of plants to hide in, is better than an hour or two in the frost. I hope that's right.

Ooh you have a MSc! What was your dissertation on?

Heh - Quantative Structural Activity Relationships of Environmental Estrogens. Or in other words, getting a bunch of unlikely molecules that act as estrogens and using stats to try and correlate parts of their chemical structure with their estrogen behaviour.

Interesting... What were the results, if any?

That quite a lot of strange things act as estrogens, even if they dont look that similar. It depends on the charge patterns of different groups on a benzene ring - certain structures can mimic the approximate shape and charge distribution of estrogens, and so can fit in the right receptor and generate a mild estrogenic effect.

I found a few slight structural patterns :)

Heheh I wrote one long ago and I still don't know if it's any good. I'm really bad at objectively rating/reviewing things I do myself.

Yeah - I have no idea whether mine are any good. I think probably not, as all the jobs I've managed to get have been through application forms rather than CVs. Either process makes me cringe, and I'm too embarrassed to ever get a second opinion, but at least the forms are more focused.
